Coco Before Chanel & Séraphine

When our daughter got sick with bronchitis on Saturday we have pretty much spend our days indoors. Yesterday evening I watched two true story based movies, both these are very compelling stories of two very different, yet artistic and impressive women.

The first movie I saw was Coco Before Channel (2009), the one I have waited for long and now it finally was at our local Blockbuster. In a leading role in this film you can see this young lady, the always as fascinating and wonderful Audrey Tautou.

Coco Chanel started her career as a hat maker, but then found her way into the world of fashion. She always had her own vision of how women should dress, really fighting against corsets or too theatrical dresses that the women of her time used to wear. She always dressed up in black, using the color white, gray or navy blue as accent colors.

In this movie also the romantic and colorful relationship between Coco and english businessman Arthur Boy Capel (Alessandro Nivola) is being brought to attention, which unfortunately ended tragically. Coco never married Boy or no other man, but was devoted to her business after losing Boy.

Gabrielle Coco Chanel, tuo orpokodin tyttö, kykeni nostamaan itsensä periksiantamattomuudellaan ja rohkeilla visioillaan muodin huipulle. Hänestä tuli lopulta unohtumaton muotimaailman ikoni, nimi, jonka kaikki tietävät ja jonka nimeen monet muotisuunnittelijat yhä edelleen vannovat.

Gabrielle Coco Chanel, a girl from an orphanage, was able to lift herself up to the top of the fashion world with her courage and brave visions. She made herself an unforgettable fashion world icon. She was and still is a name everyone knows and her work still inspires us women and is all in all a woman in whoms name many of the fashion designers still swear.

Katselin eilen illalla myös elokuvan Séraphine (2008), joka kertoo hiukan tummasävyisellä tyylillä keski-iän saavuttaneesta taloudenhoitajasta Séraphinesta (Yolande Moreau), joka elää 1900-luvun Ranskassa. Eräs hänen työnantajistaan sattuu olemaan tunnettu saksalainen taidekriitikko Wilhelm Uhde (Ulrich Tukur), joka huomaa taloudenhoitajansa taiteelliset kyvyt.

I also watched this movie Séraphine (2008) last night. This is a true story about a middle aged housekeeper Séraphine (Yolande Moreau) who lives in the early 1900s France as a housekeeper. She is suddenly discovered by his employee, kwown german art critic Wilhelm Uhde (Ulrich Tukur), who realizes that his housekeeper is actually a very talented artist.

Séraphine was used to work in the kitchen, cleaning hallways and floors and serving the upper level families. But who would have thought that this dowdy lady was able to see a lot of beauty around her and was artisticly very talented, painting strong and vibrant paintings in her free time.

Séraphine always painted during the evening and night hours, in the fragile candle light. She also had a habit to sing to herself while painting. She first started with small paintings, but when she was discovered she started making much bigger and bolder paintings. Unfortunately Seraphine got mentally unstable and thought her inspiration came from the bigger forces. She ended up spending her last years in mental asylum.

Séraphine may be gone, but her powerful art work will always be with us. Personally I cannot but admire the vivid colors and strong brush strokes in her work.

Babies

Järkyttävistä allergia-oireilusta vihdoin hivenen toipuneena ja sängyn pohjalta nousseena odotan jo innoissani muutamia uusia ensi-iltoja. Tämän dokumentin arvelen olevan varsin mukavaa ja viihdyttävää katseltavaa, etenkin näin äiti-näkökulmasta.

Getting finally a bit better from the most horrible allergy symptoms for years I wait anxiously to see some new openings. Among them is this documentary, which seems to be very nice especially from a mother's point of view.

Tulee ensi-iltaan Yhdysvalloissa 7.5.2010

Has it's premiere here in U.S. May 7th, 2010.

Ja hymyn huulille nostattava traileri löytyy nuolesta klikkaamalla. Mutta varoituksen sana, väkivaltaa on tiedossa jo heti ensimmäisessä kohtauksessa ;-)

And the smile uplifting trailer can be watched when clicking the play button. But be careful, there will be violence already in the first scene ;-)

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Kävimme viime viikolla katsomassa tyttären kanssa How to Train Your Dragon elokuvan ja ensitunnelma oli melko jännittynyt.

We went to see How to Train Your Dragon last week and first impression was quite excited and nervous. Our 5-year old daughter was even a bit scared to see a movie about dragons. But this movie suprised us positively and we realized that all those scary looking dragons were in the end almost pet like, feeling creatures.

The main characters of this movie are here. Young viking boy called Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and a dragon he first encounters and then names Toothless. Toothless Dragon can make a huge impact on the viewer. The most dangerous and frightening dragon of all, which a boy named Hiccup was able to train. There is something special about the Toothless character. He and the friendship between these two characters drills deep inside us and makes an impact into the minds of both the small and the bigger human minds.

These two sympatethic characters have many adventures ahead of them. That big framed, black dragon reveals to be a sympathetic and protective creature with cat like eyes and funny faces that makes you smile. Toothless makes even the youngest movie goers to realize that you may find a warm heart under a scary looking skin.

That pitch black dragon also teaches us that you may have flaws and imperfections in you but you're still a remarkable and unique you. And you guessed right, even Toothless is not perfect...

I recommend this movie to all you friends of animation and adventure. This experience offers excitement, joy and nice experience for both children and grown ups!
